Azithral is a type of antibiotic ointment used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria. It is specifically formulated for ophthalmic (eye) use, to treat bacterial conjunctivitis (commonly known as pink eye) or other bacterial infections of the eye.
You’re supposed to apply this ointment right on the affected eye or eyes just as your doctor has advised. It fights the bacteria in your eye, improving your symptoms and clearing your infection.
The main ingredient in Azithral eye ointment, azithromycin, fights the bacteria causing your eye infection by blocking it from producing a crucial protein necessary for its growth.
When deprived of this protein, the bacteria become weaker and less stable, allowing your body's immune system to eliminate them. As your body kills off the bacteria, your symptoms should start to get better.
Azithral eye ointment comes in a single dose of 5g of 1% w/w azithromycin. Azithral also comes in 500 mg tablets, but these are less likely to be prescribed because the ointment is more effective for eye infections.

You should always follow your doctor’s advice when using Azithral eye ointment. Here are a few things to keep in mind when using it:
The treatment lasts for three to seven days, and you should notice improvements during this period. Even after finishing the course, its effects might persist for a bit longer, so you may see more improvement even after your treatment finishes.
If you accidentally dispense too much Azithral into your eyes, wipe it off with a clean tissue or wash off the excess gently with water. Do not rub your eyes. Be cautious not to touch your eyes with unwashed hands or the tip of the tube to prevent the spread of infection.
Keep an eye out for any unusual symptoms or side effects that might arise due to the mistake and keep your doctor informed of these symptoms.
