Duphalac syrup is a medicine mainly used to treat constipation. It has lactulose, a sugar that changehs thr density of stool to make them softer. This makes them easier to pass when going to the toilet. The syrup works by pulling water into the bowel, making the stool softer and easier to pass.
It's often prescribed for short-term relief from constipation or for long-term management of conditions like chronic constipation or liver problems.
Duphalac syrup contains lactulose which consists of a blend of sugars known as 1,4 beta galactoside-fructose, which cannot be digested in the small intestine. Instead, it reaches the large intestine where it acts as a laxative, absorbing water into the bowel to soften stool and provide relief from constipation.
Additionally, lactulose helps to promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the colon. This prevents too much ammonia from being made in the gut, which can aid digestion and regulate bowel movements. Overall, Duphalac syrup helps to relieve constipation by increasing stool bulk and promoting regular bowel movements.
There’s only one dose. Duphalac syrup comes in a 450ml bottle that contains 3.335g of lactulose for each 5ml of the syrup. The syrup is lemon flavoured to make it easier to swallow without leaving a bad aftertaste.
If this dose doesn’t help to alleviate symptoms, then you’ll need to speak to your pharmacist or clinician about other altneratives.

Here are a few things to keep in mind when taking Duphalac syrup:
Duphalac syrup should begin to work in your system within 24-72 hours after your initial dose, and should continue to operate more swiftly after that. To aid with stool softening, you should increase your water intake to 6-8 glasses per day.
If you forget to take a dosage of Duphalac syrup, you can take it as soon as you recall, as long your next dose isn’t due in the next few hours. If it is too close to your next dose, just skip the one you missed and continue as usual. Do not take an additional dose to compensate for a missed one, since taking too much at once might cause gastric pain.
