Medication for severe diarrhoea.
Lomotil is a medication used to help with diarrhoea related symptoms like loose stools and abdominal pain. It contains two active ingredients— diphenoxylate and atropine.
Lomotil is usually prescribed for short term use. Speak to one of our doctors to find out if it’s the correct treatment option for you. Order Lomotil online and get it delivered in discreet packaging, right to your home.
Lomotil is an antidiarrheal medication that contains diphenoxylate and atropine as their active ingredients. While diphenoxylate is an opioid that slows down the movement in your gut, the atropine in Lomotil helps prevent misuse of the medication.
Your doctor will usually prescribe Lomotil for a short time to help treat your diarrhoea. But it's important to take it exactly as your doctor tells you because it can cause side effects and problems if used incorrectly or for a long time.
The active ingredients in Lomotil are diphenoxylate and atropine sulfate. These work together to treat diarrhea, but they have different roles. Diphenoxylate is an opioid, similar to certain pain medications, but it works by slowing down the movement of the intestines. It works by affecting the muscles in the intestines, reducing the frequency of bowel movements and making stool less watery, which can effectively relieve diarrhea.
Atropine is included in Lomotil to discourage its misuse or abuse. It's added in small amounts and doesn’t actually help treat diarrhoea.
Lomotil is commonly available in tablet form, with doctors usually prescribing one or two tablets (containing 2.5 mg of diphenoxylate and 0.025 mg of atropine each tablet) three to four times a day for adults. Dosages, however, may differ based on the severity of your symptoms and how you respond to the drug.
It is best to reach out to a doctor to know the exact Lomotil dosage that would best address your condition.

Avoid taking more Lomotil than prescribed or using it for a longer than you should, as this can cause side effects or dependence. Drink plenty of fluids when taking Lomotil to prevent dehydration caused by diarrhea. However, it's best to avoid beverages with caffeine or alcohol, as they can cause further dehydration.
Do not use Lomotil alongside alcohol, sedatives, or other medications as this can cause drowsiness or slow down bowel movements, increasing the risk of side effects. Inform your doctor about the medications you are taking to avoid unwanted side effects.
Lomotil usually begins to work within an hour or two of taking it, however this may vary from person to person. It might also depend on how severe your symptoms are.
You may notice a reduction in diarrhoea symptoms, like fewer visits to the toilet or harder stools, pretty quickly after taking Lomotil. It is important to remember, however, that while Lomotil helps relieve diarrhoea symptoms, it may not always provide rapid relief.
