Folitrax contains methotrexate, often abbreviated as MTX. It is commonly used in two main ways: in chemotherapy, a treatment for certain types of cancer; and as an immunosuppressant, meaning it helps to dampen or suppress your immune system.
This immunosuppressive property makes it useful in treating autoimmune diseases, where the immune system is overly active and attacks the body's own tissues. So, depending on the situation, Folitrax is used to slow down the growth of cancer cells or to calm down an overactive immune system in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis and gout.
When used to treat conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, methotrexate acts as an immunosuppressant. It calms down your immune system and reduces inflammation. Although we're not entirely sure how it does this, some researchers think it might increase the levels of a natural chemical called adenosine in your body, which is known for its anti-inflammatory effects.
If Folitrax is effective for you, you'll probably notice a reduction in swollen and painful joints, less stiffness in the morning, and increased ease in moving around and doing your daily activities.
Folitrax comes in various doses of 2.5mg, 5mg, 7.5mg, 10mg, 15mg, and 20mg. Usually, for rheumatoid arthritis, Folitrax is taken either once a week or split into three doses over 36 hours once a week. For gout, your doctor will be able to help you with the exact dosage.

Folitrax or methotrexate (MTX) is usually given once a week because taking it every day might be harder on the liver. Yet, some people might find it easier to handle if they take smaller doses more often. Take one Folitrax tablet – preferably after a meal – to make it easier for you to absorb.
Folitrax, a disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD), helps ease pain and reduce swelling. By slowing down the progression of the disease, it might also prevent damage to your joints.
It might take around twelve weeks or even longer to fully feel the benefits of methotrexate, but you could start noticing an improvement in three to six weeks.
If you accidentally take more Folitrax than you should, contact your doctor immediately. If you need to take a high dose of Folitrax, it can affect your folate levels, so avoid taking folic acid supplements alongside your treatment.
