Zyrik is a medicine for gout and kidney stones. You usually take it as a tablet every day. Sometimes it takes a while to feel its effects, so your doctor might give you other medicines to help with your symptoms right away.
Gout is a type of arthritis that makes your joint tissues painful and swollen. It happens when your body doesn’t get rid of enough uric acid, which can build up in your body. This buildup can create tiny crystals around your joints made of sodium urate. When these crystals form lumps called tophi, they cause inflammation. If not treated, this swelling can harm your bones and cartilage, leading to long-term joint damage.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved allopurinol (the active ingredient in Zyrik) in 1966 as a primary treatment for gout, and it's still a very important medicine for treating high uric acid levels today.
Zyrik helps gout by reducing uric acid production and stopping it from piling up in your body. When uric acid builds up in your joints, it causes gout symptoms. Zyrik also prevents kidney stones, which can form from too much uric acid.
By cutting down the amount of urates in your blood, it lowers the chance of sodium urate crystals forming. This way of working is similar to other xanthine-oxidase inhibitors, the group of medicines that Zyrik belongs to.
Zyrik doesn't help ease pain during a gout attack. In fact, starting to take Zyrik during a gout attack might make it worse. So if you're experiencing a flare-up, it's better to use painkillers. Otherwise, you can use Zyrik to prevent the formation of painful uric acid crystals and lower the chance of future gout attacks.
There are two options for Zyrik doses: 100mg and 300mg of allopurinol. Typically, you'll begin with the lower dose and then switch to the 300mg dose if the initial dose doesn't improve your symptoms as expected.

Always follow your doctor's advice for taking your medicine. If you have any worries while taking it, you can check the leaflet that comes with it for extra help. Here's how you should take this treatment:
Take the tablet whenever you can, but try to take it at the same time every day for consistency.
Swallow the tablet whole with water, especially after having a meal.
Zyrik normally starts working straight away (within an hour), but you may not notice any significant changes right away. This is because Zyrik works by lowering uric acid production in your body. It does not dissolve the crystals that have already developed in your joints. Slowing the formation of this acid allows your body to gradually break down the existing crystals. This process, however, may take many weeks to show any noticeable benefits.
If you take the treatment once a day, simply take it whenever you remember. If it's twice a day and you forget, skip that dose and stick to your regular schedule. It's important not to double your dose to make up for a missed one, as this can be risky for your health. If you've taken too much Zyrik and experience symptoms like vomiting, dizziness, stomach pains, or headaches, speak to your doctor immediately.
