Sparacid DS is a syrup that contains sucralfate. It’s prescribed to treat stomach ulcers. It works by forming a protective barrier over the ulcer and this protects it from stomach acid that will irritate and exacerbate it.
Sparacid DS also works to reduce the amount of acid produced in your stomach to help with the prevention of ulcers and also the irritation caused to existing ulcers.
Duodenal ulcers can be both painful and inconvenient. They develop in the small intestine and are usually caused by infection with a common germ called H.pylori.
Sparacid DS works in two ways to treat duodenal ulcers and stomach ulcers. Firstly, it coats the ulcer with a protective barrier that prevents stomach acid from irritating it so that it can heal.
Secondly, it reduces the amount of acid produced in the stomach and this not only helps to reduce irritation of the ulcer and speed up healing, but also prevents the flow of acid into the oesophagus. Acid in the oesophagus can cause heartburn.
Sparacid DS is available as an oral suspension in two dosage sizes - 500mg and 1000mg. Your doctor will advise you about the best dose for you to take. They will monitor your progress and make any changes that are needed to ensure that your treatment is effective.
It’s important to take your treatment for as long as your doctor tells you to, this will usually involve taking a dose of Sparacid DS twice a day for between two and four weeks. For patients with more severe symptoms Sparacid is also prescribed to be taken four times a day.

It’s important not to stop taking Sparacid DS until your doctor tells you to, even if you think that it isn’t working. Sparacid DS can start to offer relief from the symptoms of duodenal and stomach ulcers straight away. You should notice a reduction in acid and associated heartburn after a single dose.
Treatment of the ulcer itself takes a little longer and it can take four to six weeks for an ulcer to heal.
If you forget to take a dose of Sparacid DS, you should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for you to take your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue to take Sparacid DS as you normally would. Never take a double dose of Sparacid DS.
If you take more Sparacid DS than you should, seek medical attention straight away. When visiting a doctor take your treatment with you so that they can see what you have taken.
