Meflotas tablets contain mefloquine and are taken as a preventive measure against malaria. They're typically prescribed if you are traveling to specific regions where malaria risk is high.
Usually, Meflotas isn't prescribed for travel to countries with low or moderate malaria risk, but it might be advised if other antimalarial medications like doxycycline aren't suitable for your needs.
For protection, Meflotas is taken once a week, from ten days before you depart and until four weeks after you return from a high-risk area.
In 2019, there were approximately 229 million reported cases of malaria globally. Malaria poses a severe threat to life and is caused by the plasmodium parasite, transmitted through mosquito bites. When an infected mosquito bites and breaks the skin, it passes the malaria parasite to humans.
Symptoms of malaria typically include fever, vomiting, and headaches, and they usually come on around 7 to 18 days after infection (also known as an incubation period).
Mefloquine, the active component of Meflotas, works to halt the multiplication of plasmodium parasites within the body. By obstructing the production of an enzyme crucial for the parasite's spread, mefloquine weakens the parasite, enabling the immune system to eliminate it.
Meflotas is available in a single dose of 250mg and is suitable for both adults and children weighing over 45kg.
The recommended dosage is one tablet per week, beginning ten days before your departure to a high-risk area and throughout your stay. Then when you get back, you'll need to keep taking one tablet each week for an additional four weeks. In specific situations, such as if you're on other medications, you may consider starting Meflotas two to three weeks before your travel to ensure compatibility and avoid potential adverse effects from drug interactions.

You need to be on Meflotas before, during and after your travel to a high-risk area. Here are a few general guidelines to follow when taking Meflotas:
Meflotas should provide effective malaria protection from day one of your travel, provided you start taking it ten days beforehand.
The active ingredient typically takes 6-24 hours to enter your bloodstream. Starting Meflotas ten days ahead allows you to manage any potential side effects before your departure and switch to an alternative treatment if needed. Additionally, this time frame allows your body to acclimate to the medication before your travels.
If you forget to take a dose of Meflotas, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed one and continue with your regular schedule. Avoid doubling up on doses of Meflotas.
In case of accidentally taking an excess amount of Meflotas, seek advice from a doctor for further guidance.
