What is Unwanted 72?

The Unwanted 72 pill is a type of contraceptive pill you can use if your primary method of contraception has failed, or if you’ve had sex without using contraception. It contains levonorgestrel and needs to be taken within 72 hours of having unprotected sex, or if you know or strongly suspect that other forms of contraceptives like condoms have not worked. Although it can be taken up to 72 hours afterwards, the sooner you use it, the better. If taken within 12 hours, it is substantially more effective – up to 99%.

It is important to note that the morning after pill should not be your first line of protection when it comes to preventing pregnancies. You should rely on other methods like condoms, birth control pills or copper T when engaging in regular intercourse.

How does it work?

Unwanted 72 contains levonorgestrel, a synthetic progesterone hormone. It works by preventing the release of eggs from the ovaries and stopping sperm from fertilizing any released eggs. Its effectiveness is highest during the preovulatory phase when the chances of fertilization are greatest. However, it does not work if implantation has already occurred.

It is best to take the pill as soon as you realize you’ve had unprotected sex, and it’s most effective if you take it within 12 hours.

Who is it for?

How to take Unwanted 72

Here are a few steps you can follow to ensure that Unwanted 72 works effectively:

• Try to take the tablet within 12 hours or as soon as you remember for it to be the most effective. If you take it later than 72 hours (3 days), it isn’t likely to work.
• Swallow the tablet whole with water.
• Check with your doctor if you are taking other medications as it may make Unwanted 72 less effective.
• Continue to use your regular birth control at the normal time or use condoms till your next period, especially if you are continuing to have sex.

How effective is Unwanted 72?

Studies have found that if you take Unwanted 72 within 72 hours after you've had unprotected sex, levonorgestrel in it can reduce your risk of pregnancy by up to 87%. If you take it within 24 hours, it’s even more effective.

Even if you get your next period, you should take a pregnancy test just to make sure that the tablet has worked for you.

What happens if I take too much Unwanted 72?

A packet of Unwanted 72 will contain only one pill so reports of side effects after taking too many Unwanted 72 tablets have been rare.

Taking more than the required dosage may make you feel nauseous or cause irregular bleeding. If you are actually sick after taking Unwanted 72, contact your doctor as soon as you can. The tablet may not have worked so you might need to take another one.
