Tenvir is a PrEP mediation used to prevent the HIV virus which ultimately causes AIDS. It does this by stopping the virus from establishing itself in your body if you happen to come into contact with it.
The ingredients in Tenvir are also used in other medications that are used to treat HIV in an infected person, but Tenvir itself isn’t used for this purpose. It’s only for people who are risk of HIV, but don’t have the virus, and don’t want to ensure they don’t contract it.
People who are HIV positive will need to take a different treatment, because Tenvir might not be effective at controlling their viral levels. And if you’re unsure of your HIV status but want to start taking PrEP, you’ll normally need to do a test beforehand (taking PrEP if you’re HIV positive can make antivirals less effective).
So if you already have HIV and are looking for treatment, or think you could have HIV but aren’t sure, you should see a doctor as soon as possible. It's important to take Tenvir exactly as the doctor prescribes and to keep up with regular check-ups to make sure it's working well and not causing any problems.
Tenvir, with the active ingredient tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF), prevents HIV, the virus that damages our immune system. When we take Tenvir, it disrupts a key enzyme called reverse transcriptase that HIV uses to copy itself in the body.
HIV targets crucial immune cells called CD4 or T cells. Once inside these cells, HIV changes their RNA into DNA. This new viral DNA blends with our healthy cell’s DNA, allowing the virus to reproduce and harm the immune system. Tenvir prevents HIV cells from duplicating, and stops the virus from infecting us if we become exposed to it.
The dosage strength available for Tenvir contains 300 milligrams of tenofovir disoproxil fumarate. The appropriate dosage of Tenvir will be decided by your doctor based on your health conditions and your risk profile, which usually includes what type of sex you have.

There are several different ways to take PrEP. Your doctor will usually prescribe one Tenvir tablet a day. This means you’re protected against HIV no matter what your risk profile is. To get the most out of your medicine, try to take it consistently at the same time every day.
If you’re only having sex occasionally, you may be able to do something called ‘event-based dosing’, which involves taking PrEP for a few days starting before and ending a few days after your period of sexual activity. Ask your doctor about this if this is what you plan to do.
Make sure you inform your doctor of all medications that you’re taking so as to avoid any unnecessary drug interactions that could affect your health.
To give protection, any PrEP medicine must reach and maintain a particular level in the blood and mucous membranes of the body. The time required may differ from person to person.
People using PrEP who engage in regular anal intercourse must take the medicine every day for 7 days to attain the amount required for complete protection. If you’re planning on having anal sex and it is not a regular thing for you, you can take two tablets 2-24 hours before sexual activity. If you plan to engage in vaginal intercourse, it takes around 20 days of perfect use to achieve complete protection for your partner.
Your doctor may order regular blood tests to see how well it's working, and check that it isn’t affecting your liver or kidney function. Taking the medicine regularly as the doctor says is important for it to work well.
Missing a dose can hamper the effectiveness of Tenvir. So make sure you set reminders like an alarm on the phone or a sticky note on your refrigerator to take the medication on time.
If you forget to take a dose, take it when you recall. Skip taking it if it is almost time for your next dose.
