Hytrin is a brand name for the medication terazosin. It belongs to a class of drugs called alpha blockers, which work by relaxing muscles in the prostate and bladder neck, making it easier to urinate. While Hytrin is primarily used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlarged prostate), it is also used to help manage symptoms of urinary incontinence.
Terazosin, the active ingredient in Hytrin, relaxes the muscles of the bladder neck by blocking specific impulses in these muscles. As a result, urine can flow more freely.
As a selective alpha-blocker, terazosin can block specific receptors called alpha-1 receptors in certain areas of the body. For example, it can affect the blood vessels surrounding the penis. Blocking these receptors can have various effects, such as relaxing the muscles in those blood vessels, which may help improve blood flow.
There are two doses of terazosin available for Hytrin: 1mg and 2mg. Based on a medical evaluation, your doctor will be able to assist you with the appropriate dosage. Typically, you will begin on the lower dose of Hytrin; but, if the lower amount isn't working as well as it should, your doctor may increase your dose. When taking the drug, it is advisable to heed the advice of the doctor rather than adjusting the dosage on your own.

Along with a glass of water, swallow your Hytrin pills whole. You’ll normally take them once a day, usually before sleep. You don’t need to take Hytrin with food, although it is advisable to take it consistently at the same time each day (and taking it alongside food may help with this).
In order to reduce the potential for adverse effects, your doctor may start you on a low dose of Hytrin and gradually raise it over time.
The time it takes for Hytrin to start showing its effects will differ based on the dosage that you are prescribed and how bad your condition is. However, on average, it could be around 4-6 weeks before you start noticing relief from symptoms like frequent urination.
Take Hytrin at the same time each day to guarantee that your body is getting the same amount of it. If you forget to take it at the usual time, take the missed dosage as soon as you remember.
However, if your next dose is due soon, skip the one you missed and take the next dose at the usual time. If you missed a dose and you’re unsure what to do, ask your doctor for advice.
