What is Acutret?

Acutret contains the active ingredient isotretinoin and is prescribed for severe acne that hasn’t responded to other treatments or if you have a higher risk of developing complications.

A course of Acutret commonly lasts about 15–20 days after which it’s possible for the acne to have been treated and prevented from coming back.

Acutret is commonly prescribed to be taken once a day with food and at the same time each day.

Acutret is branded medicine and is also sold as Nutret, Sebum ISO, Isotane 20, Sotret, Systroin 20 and Isoin 20. These medications all work in a similar way, but the appearance of the packaging and pills may differ depending on the brand.

How does Acutret work?

Human skin has pores that help to remove dead skin cells from the body via an oily substance called sebum. When the pores become blocked with sebum, bacteria can grow in them and produce cysts and pimples that are associated with acne.

Acne is a common condition that affects most people at some time in their life. Its symptoms include red skin, spots and oily skin. It usually clears up after adolescence. Severe and long-lasting acne can cause low self-esteem, social anxiety and depression.

For some people, hormone imbalance, stress and genetic factors make acne severe and long lasting. Where this is the case, isotretinoin can be taken.

Isotretinoin, the active ingredient in Acutret, is found in the body in small quantities because some is produced in the liver. The amount produced by the body isn’t enough to combat severe acne and a synthetic version must be taken if being used for the treatment of acne.

Isotretioin is derived from vitamin A and belongs to a class of drugs called retinoids. It treats acne by limiting the amount of sebum that your body produces, this decrease in sebum production prevents the pores from becoming blocked and pimples and cysts from forming. It also shrinks the glands that produce the sebum, and this helps to prevent acne from recurring once you have taken the course of treatment. Acutret also reduces the presence of bacteria and so reduces the risk of infection in the pores. It also has anti-inflammatory properties which help to soothe and calm the skin.

What doses of Acutret are there?

Acutret comes in four dosage sizes: 5mg, 10mg, 20mg and 30mg.

After looking at your skin and talking to you about your symptoms, your doctor will advise you about which dose to start with. Once you’ve started your treatment you’ll need to closely monitor progress and discuss this with your doctor so that changes can be made where necessary. It’s common to start on a low dose of Acutret and increase the dose as needed once you have started the treatment and can talk to your doctor about its effects.

Acutret doesn’t work for everyone and it can take some time to find the best treatment for severe acne. As you take your course of treatment your doctor will be able to make suggestions and help you to find the best treatment for you.

How to take Acutret

You should always take Acutret exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

You’ll usually be told to:

  • take Acutret with food
  • take your treatment at the same time everyday
  • take one pill a day
  • avoid sunlight whils taking Acutret
  • eat a healthy diet whilst taking Acutret

How long does it take Acutret to work?

Ultimately, the amount of time it takes for Acutret to cure acne depends on the severity of the acne at the start of treatment. A course of Acutret typically lasts 10–15 weeks, and it’s important to be patient and allow the treatment to work.

Many people start to see a positive change in their acne within a few weeks.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Acutret?

If you forget to take a dose of Acutret, take it as soon as you remember. It’s best to eat something before you take it as food helps with the absorption of the active ingredient in Acutret. If it’s almost time for you to take your next dose of Acutret, skip the missed dose and continue to take your treatment as you normally would.

Acutret can take some time to work, and it’s important that you don’t take more than the doctor has prescribed. If you feel that it’s not working for you then you should speak to your doctor.

If you take too much Acutret, seek medical attention. When seeing a doctor, take your medication with you so that they can see what you have taken.

FAQ: Acutret

Have something specific you want to know about Acutret? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Acutret different to other acne treatments?

Answer:
Acutret is usually prescribed when other treatments for acne have not worked, this is because it is a powerful treatment.

Unlike other acne treatments that are prescribed for mild acne, Acutret is effective in the treatment of recalcitrant nodular acne.

Nodular acne occurs when bacteria gets trapped in your skin’s pores and causes on-going infection. This type of acne doesn’t react to many, less powerful, acne treatments because it’s caused by infection.

Is Acutret similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
Acutret is a branded treatment. It is also sold under the names Nutret, Sebum ISO, Isotane 20, Sotret, Systroin 20 and Isoin 20. These treatments all work in the same way, but the appearance of the tablets and packaging may differ due to branding.

Which dose of Acutret should I use?

Answer:
There are four doses of Acutret available and the one you start on will depend on the severity of your acne and your reaction to any previous treatments. Your doctor will discuss your symptoms and medical history before prescribing a starting dose. If this dose does not work,or if you have a reaction to it, your doctor will be able to alter the dose or suggest an alternative treatment for you to try.

How effective is Acutret?

Answer:
Acutret is a very effective treatment for severe acne. This is mainly due to its powerful active ingredient, isotretinoin. This retinoid has been considered the most effective treatment for severe acne for over twenty years. Clinical studies show that it is 85% effective at curing severe acne within 16 weeks.

Do I need a prescription for Acutret?

Answer:
Yes. Acutret is only available on prescription because it is a very powerful treatment and needs to be monitored by a doctor once you start taking it.

Before you start taking Acutret, a doctor will need to discuss your symptoms and medical history with you to make sure that it’s the right treatment for you to try.
