What is Asthalin?

Asthalin is a bronchodilator that relaxes the muscles in the lungs and widens the airways. It’s very effective at managing asthma symptoms, with salbutamol (its active ingredient) being amongst the most widely used.

Asthalin expectorants (cough syrups) work rapidly to suppress coughs, loosening of congestion in the throat and lungs.

How does Asthalin work?

Asthalin’s action helps relieve the symptoms of asthma and bronchial infections by relaxing the bronchial tubes, the main airways that lead to the lungs. This in turn widens the airways, allowing for easier breathing. Asthalin gets into action almost immediately and its effect continues for about 5 hours.

When a severe asthma attack occurs, it can be both frightening and dangerous. Having a quick working treatment like Asthalin can be really helpful.

What doses of Asthalin are there?

Asthalin’s dosage will depend on a number of things, such as the severity of the condition being treated, how well the medicine is tolerated and what the condition is. Tablets tend to be 2mg doses, while Asthalin 100 mcg doses are common for inhalers at the start of treatment. This can be increased to 400 mcg if needed. Asthalin 4mg doses are prescribed only to those patients who have exercise induced asthma or in those patients who have inhaler associated side effects.

It is important that you take the correct dosage. Your doctor will advise you on the dosage and frequency of treatment. Follow them to get the most from your treatment, safely. Asthalin inhaler doses are usually taken up to four times a day.

How to use Asthalin inhalers

Asthalin inhalers are really useful for asthma as they can give immediate relief when necessary. They are also known as relief inhalers.

Take one to two puffs every four to six hours. For some, just one puff every four hours will be enough. You might be instructed to start with the lowest dose and only add the second dose if needed.

How to use Asthalin nebulizers

Asthalin bronchodilators that are administered straight to the airways are perfect to provide immediate relief from asthma and bronchitis. The inhaler requires you to breathe in sharply while the nebulizer only requires you breathe normally. This makes the nebulizer more suitable for your children who might not follow the instructions for an inhaler properly. One thing to remember while using the nebuliser is that you have to continue breathing until all the medication/mist is used up.

The disadvantage of a nebulizer is it may need to be plugged in as it needs a power source to spray the fine mist. It also requires a mask in order to ensure the full dose reaches the lungs. This action may also make a nebulizer more effective in severe cases.

Dosage instructions are the same as those for the inhaler, one to two puffs every four to six hours or one every four hours.

Currently we do not offer Asthalin nebulizers through our service.

Is Asthalin available in other forms?

Yes. Besides inhalers and nebulisers, Asthalin is also available as capsules, tablets and syrups. Capsules/tablets are slower working versions of the treatment that can ease the symptoms of coughing, wheezing and general breathing issues. Due to the fact they do not work as quickly as an inhaler or nebulizer, they are not considered to be a suitable treatment for more severe cases of asthma.

Swallow tablets with water. They can be taken with or without food.

Asthalin syrups belong to a class of drugs called bronchodilators which work rapidly to suppress coughs and give relief from asthma symptoms like breathlessness or congestion in the throat and lungs.

FAQ: Asthalin Inhaler

Have something specific you want to know about Asthalin Inhaler? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

What is Asthalin prescribed for?

Asthalin is prescribed for asthma, bronchitis and any condition that causes the airways to inflame. These conditions can be mild in nature or present with severe symptoms. Asthalin syrups are used as treatment for coughs (but we don’t currently offer the syrup through our service).

Asthma is a condition that affects the lungs. Symptoms include breathing problems and wheezing. It can occur at any age and there is currently no cure. It can be well managed with treatments that are easy to use, so the condition need not have a major impact on your life.

Bronchitis can be described as an infection of the airways, causing inflammation and prohibiting your ability to breathe fully. Bronchitis can be acute (temporary) or chronic (ongoing).

Is Asthalin the same as Salbutamol?

Asthalin and salbutamol are essentially the same thing, with salbutamol being the active ingredient in Asthalin. Salbutamol can also be referred to as Albutamol and is one of the main medications for treating asthma. Asthalin is a reliever treatment, which means it should be used when you’re having an asthma attack.

Are there other treatments similar to Asthalin?

Yes. Asthalin’s generic name is salbutamol, the active ingredient in the medication. It is also sold under this name. There are also various other brands to choose from. These include Salbetol, Salcen, Avihist and Salnik for tablets. There is also Salvent, Ralbet, Usal, Sentolin and Gracof Plus for syrup and Ventorlin, Asthavent, Rheolin, Durasel Breathaler and Bronkonat for inhalers.

Which other types of asthma medications are there?

Asthma medications come in many forms. Some are reliever treatments, such as Asthalin which are usually bronchodilators. Others are preventers, usually containing a corticosteroid, such as salmeterol. Treatments containing salmeterol include Serobid.

Besides these, there are also combination treatments like Esiflo, Seroflo and Flutrol containing Salmeterol and Fluticasone Propionate and Aerotide Inhaler with Salbutamol and Beclometasone.

Are natural remedies for asthma effective?

There is little evidence to show that natural remedies for asthma are effective. So, do not replace the treatments you’ve been advised to take with natural alternatives. Taking natural treatments alongside something like Asthalin is also not recommended without first talking to your doctor as they can affect how it works.

There are some things you can do to help the condition, such as breathing techniques, which might reduce the need for preventer treatments, but you should always have your reliever medication close at hand, just in case.
