What is Montomer L?

Montomer L is a combination treatment for allergic rhinitis symptoms and can also be used to treat the symptoms of asthma.

Montomer L contains the active ingredients levocetirizine and montelukast. It helps to reduce allergy symptoms such as itching, swelling and congestion and also reduces lung and airway inflammation associated with asthma.

It’s a branded medicine and is also available as Montemac-L, Montair LC, Levocet M, Montina-L, Montek LC and Odimont-LC. These medicines all work in a similar way, but the appearance of the tablets and packaging may vary.

How does Montomer L work?

When you come into contact with a substance that you are allergic to, your body reacts by producing histamine. This tells your body to excrete the allergen by making your nose run and your eyes water. Often, your body’s response is exaggerated and responds to things that really pose little harm to your health and immune system such as pollen, pet hair and certain foods. Levocetirizine belongs to a group of medicines called antihistamines. These work to regulate your body’s histamine production and stop the effects we associate with an allergic reaction.

In those with asthma, the airways are sensitive and become swollen and lined with mucus when they are exposed to certain triggers such as pollutants, pollen and certain foods. Montelukast helps to keep your airways open when they become inflamed, preventing breathlessness and asthma attacks.

When these two medicines combine in Montomer L, they work to reduce the symptoms of allergic reaction and to treat the symptoms of asthma and help to lower the risk of an asthma attack.

What doses of Montomer L are there?

Montomer L is available in one dosage size, and contains the following active ingredients: levocetirizine 5mg and montelukast 10mg.

Your doctor will talk to you about your health and medical history before advising whether Montomer L is suitable for you. Once you start taking your medication, your doctor will monitor your progress closely and this will inform them about any changes needed. If Montomer L doesn’t work for you there may be other treatments that you can try. Your doctor will help you to explore other treatment options to find what works best for you.

How to take Montomer L

Always take Montomer L exactly as directed by your doctor.

You’ll usually be told to take your tablet:

  • whole with a glass of water
  • with or without food
  • at the same time everyday

It’s important that you don’t make changes to your dose without the advice of a doctor. If you have any questions about how to take your medication you should refer to the patient leaflet that comes with it. If you still need help when taking your medication you can log into your Treated account and send a message to one of our doctors.

How long does it take Montomer L to work?

The amount of time it takes for Montomer L to help control the symptoms of an allergic reaction or asthma can vary depending on its severity and sensitivity.

Usually, the therapeutic effects of Montomer L are felt within 1–2 hours of taking it and its effects can last upto 24 hours.

Taking your medication exactly as directed by your doctor will also help to improve its efficiency and effectiveness.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Montomer L?

If you forget to take Montomer L you should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If you’re due to take the next dose of your medication, you should skip the missed dose and carry on taking your treatment as you normally would. Never take a double dose of Montomer L.

It’s dangerous to suddenly stop taking Montomer L as this can result in an asthma attack. If you are worried about taking your medication you should consult a doctor for advice.

If you take more Montomer L than you should, you need to seek medical advice straight away. When seeing a medical professional be sure to take your medication with you so they can see how much you’ve taken.

FAQ: Montomer L

Have something specific you want to know about Montomer L? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Montomer L different to other asthma treatments?

Answer:
Montomer L is a combination treatment and is often used as an additional treatment for asthma (along with regular medications) especially when you get severe symptoms. It combines two active ingredients that work together to counteract the body’s natural histamine response and to open the airways.

Montomer L’s combined actions make it effective at reducing the symptoms associated with allergic responses and asthma.

Is Montomer L similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
Montomer L is a branded treatment and can also be purchased as Montemac-L, Montair LC, Levocet M, Montina-L, Montek LC, Levocet M and Odimont-LC. These medications all work in a similar way but are branded differently and so their tablets and packaging will differ in appearance.

Which dose of Montomer L should I use?

Answer:
After talking to you about your health, medical history and lifestyle, your doctor will be able to recommend the best dose for you to start on. Once you start taking the medication you'll be closely monitored and your doctor will be able to see how well the treatment is working for you and whether any changes need to be made to the dose you’re taking.

How effective is Montomer L?

Answer:
Montomer L combines two powerful active ingredients to produce a highly effective treatment for the relief of allergy symptoms and asthma.

Clinical studies show that combining levocetirizine and montelukast produces a treatment that’s well tolerated by patients and that allergic reaction symptoms associated with the nose and eyes were more effectively treated with the combination treatment than by the individual treatments.

Clinical trials involving both adults and children have shown levocetirizine to be consistently effective at relieving the symptoms of an allergic reaction.

Do I need a prescription for Montomer L?

Answer:
Montomer L is only available on prescription because a doctor needs to make sure that it’s suitable for you to take and then monitor your health as you take it.

After reviewing your health and medical history your doctor will advise you about the best course of treatment you should take. Not everyone will get the results they need from taking Montomer L, and if this is the case for you, your doctor will be able to help you explore alternative treatments.
