What is Finax?

Finax is a treatment for hair loss in men, or male pattern baldness, as it’s sometimes known. It prevents hormone conversion in the body that causes hair follicles to shrink, triggering hair loss.

It’s also used to treat men with an enlarged prostate, or benign prostate enlargement (or BPH for short).

Sometimes Finax can even trigger hair regrowth, although it needs to be taken on a long-term basis for you to keep getting positive results from it.

Male pattern baldness is usually pretty easy to identify. You can start to lose hair from the scalp or top of the head, but it can also start at the front of the head, which is what’s known as a receding hairline.

How does Finax work?

There’s an enzyme in the body called 5-alpha reductase. It converts the hormone testosterone into another hormone, dihydrotestosterone, or DHT. DHT can make hair follicles shrink, and trigger hair loss, if your body is sensitive to it.

The active ingredient in Finax is Finasteride that stops the enzyme from converting testosterone into DHT, reducing the amount of the enzyme in the blood and the scalp. This helps encourage hair growth, and prevent any more hair loss.

How long does Finax take to work?

It starts working in the body immediately, so it’s likely that your DHT levels will be lower as soon as you’ve taken your first dose. Generally speaking, Finax reduces DHT in the body by around 70%.

But it can take longer before you see any results. Because male pattern hair loss is a condition that develops slowly, it may take between 3 and 6 months before you see any improvement in the thickness of your hair, or any reduction in hair loss, with Finax. And it may be up to 12 months before you see the best results.

It’s easy to stop taking Finax if you’re not noticing any improvements relatively quickly, but you should keep taking it as prescribed. Your DHT levels will return to normal if you interrupt your course of treatment, and you may start to lose hair once more. Patience can be the key with this treatment.

While Finax doesn’t always trigger hair regrowth, it’s a treatment that’s often taken to stop any further loss of hair, rather than as a means of growing your hair back.

Your hair will still fall out when you’re using Finax as part of its natural growth cycle (stray hairs being replaced by new hairs), so you’ll continue to see stray hairs in the shower or the bath, on your comb, or in your hands. This is totally normal and nothing to worry about.

How to take Finax

Finax comes in packs of 30 tablets. Take one tablet every day, either with or without food, and swallow them whole.

It may take several months for you to see the full effects of medication. Continue to take Finax for as long as your doctor prescribes it. They can help you to assess if the tablets are working for you over your treatment course.

What if I missed a Finax dose?

If you miss a tablet, don’t worry. Just take the next tablet as you normally would. Don’t take a double dose to make up for a missed one.

If you frequently forget doses, setting an alarm or daily reminder can help you. If this doesn’t work, it can help to take your pill with a meal to make sure you take it at the same time each day.

Finasteride: how effective is it?

Clinical trials have shown that it’s pretty effective. In a five year medical study, two groups of men took a Finasteride tablet every day, or a placebo tablet. More than 80% of the men taking Finasteride daily found that they stopped losing hair within 6–12 months, and 66% even noticed hair regrowth . But the entire group taking the placebo experienced hair loss.

The men taking Finasteride also noticed improvement in the thickness of their hair, and that their hair looked better, following treatment.

FAQ: Finax

Have something specific you want to know about Finax? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Finasteride and Minoxidil: how are they different?

Answer:
Although they’re both treatments for hair loss, Minoxidil works in a different way to Finasteride.

Rather than stopping testosterone from being converted into DHT, Minoxidil is what’s known as a vasodilator. This just means that it helps blood vessels to widen, and improves blood flow in certain parts of the body. It causes more oxygen and nutrients to travel through the blood to your hair follicles, which can lead to hair growth.

Minoxidil doesn’t actually prevent hair loss as such, but encourages hair growth by causing hairs in a resting state (the ‘telogen’ phase) to shed, and replace these hairs with new hairs (the growing, or ‘anagen’ phase).

So while Finasteride handles the hormone side of things well and primarily stops you from losing hair, Minoxidil can really excel at promoting the growth of hair. On this basis, the two products can be very effective when they’re taken together, and in most cases, they’re safe to use together. You should always discuss taking the two treatments at the same time with our doctor first, so they can decide if they’re both suitable for you.

Does Finax affect ejaculation?

Answer:
You may find that the amount you ejaculate is less than normal with Finax, or that you don’t produce any semen. These are common side effects, and tend to clear up after a while. But if they persist, or they bother you, let us know.

Can I take Finax if my partner is pregnant?

Answer:
Finax is only prescribed for men, it should never be used by women. Small quantities of it can also pass into semen, so if you’re having sex with your partner, you should always wear a condom if you’re taking it.

Women should also be careful not to touch any crushed or broken tablets if there’s any possibility that they may be pregnant, as they can get into the bloodstream. Finax tablets have a protective coating on them to help guard against this.

What are the common side effects of Finax?

Answer:
Side effects aren’t common with Finax, but some men (up to 1 in 100) have reported difficulties getting an erection, a reduction in their sex drive and depression while taking it. Some men feel that Finasteride worsens their mood or sex drive even after they’ve stopped taking it, but there isn’t enough evidence to support this.

The benefits generally outweigh the risks, which is why it’s a licensed treatment. If you’re concerned about side effects, drop us a message. There are other options available that we can explore with you.

Can any man take Finax?

Answer:
You should let us know if you have any illnesses or medical conditions during your consultation.

Finax isn’t suitable for men who are allergic to the active ingredient finasteride or to any of the other ingredients in it (see the package insert that comes with your treatment for the full list of ingredients).

It’s also not a suitable option for children and adolescents. Finasteride hasn’t been an effective treatment for hair loss in women in clinical trials either.

If you’re already taking Finasteride or any other 5a-reductase inhibitor for prostate enlargement or any other health condition, you shouldn’t take Finasteride for hair loss.

Why should I buy Finax with Treated?

Answer:
Simple. At Treated, we put you in control of your healthcare.

We can review whether Finax or other hair loss treatments are suitable options for you during your consultation. You can then choose which treatment you’d like.

You can also choose to set up regular deliveries for your treatment, choose how much medication you need and how often you want them. Our subscription plans are pretty flexible and you can choose to change, pause or cancel your plan whenever you want.

And we don’t stop here. With our aftercare support, we’ll check in with you to see if everything’s going well, and we’re available round-the-clock, whenever you need us. Just login to your Treated account and send us a message.

Can you get Finax without a prescription?

Answer:
No. Finax is only available on prescription. It’s not a suitable treatment for all men, and can cause side effects. So it’s important to get an expert’s opinion on whether it’s safe for you to use before you take it.

We can help you to know if Finax is right for you. Take our consultation, and tell us about your health to get customised treatment recommendations.
