What is Glimy M?

Glimy M is one of the most commonly prescribed combination treatments for type 2 diabetes mellitus. It contains two effective oral diabetes medicines, glimepiride and metformin, which help to lower blood sugar levels and reduce the risks of diabetes. Glimy M is usually given when monotherapy or single ingredient treatment hasn’t been able to bring down your blood glucose levels. The combination of glimepiride and metformin is considered suitable for initial as well as long-term diabetes.

Clinical studies conducted with 2248 Indian patients reveal that multiple strengths of the glimepiride-metformin combination are safe to use and can be prescribed to patients with pre existing conditions such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, and diabetes related complications like kidney, eye or heart disease.

When you’re taking Glimy M, it is important to monitor your blood glucose levels regularly as this will help your doctor to know whether the treatment is working well for you. During the treatment, your doctor may make some changes to your treatment depending on how your body is adjusting to it.

As with most treatments, always take Glimy M strictly as directed by your doctor. If you experience some side effects or at any moment feel that the treatment isn’t working the way it should, speak to your doctor. Do not stop taking Glimy M or change dosages without consulting your doctor.

How does Glimy M work?

Glimy M actively works to keep unregulated, high levels of blood sugar within the normal range. Combining the action of its active ingredients – metformin and glimepiride, Glimy M helps the body’s insulin break down blood sugar so it can be processed safely. It can also lower glucose production from the liver, which in turn allows for more sensitivity to insulin, making it even more effective.

Metformin is usually the first line of treatment for type 2 diabetes. It improves the body’s insulin resistance, reduces the production of glucose in the liver and delays absorption of glucose from the intestines.

The other ingredient, glimepiride, belongs to a class of drugs called sulfonylurea which assists the pancreas in increasing the release of insulin from the beta cells. Sulfonylurea or glimepiride are, however, ineffective in type 1 diabetes when there is no production of insulin from the pancreas. For type 2 diabetes, glimepiride is prescribed when metformin monotherapy hasn’t been effective enough.

Are there different Glimy M dosages?

Yes. Glimy M is available in three dosages:

  • Glimy M1 which contains Glimepiride (1mg) + Metformin (500mg)
  • Glimy M2 with Glimepiride (2mg) + Metformin (500mg)
  • Glimy M0.5 containing Glimepiride (0.5mg) + Metformin (500mg)
  • Glimy M 2 Forte with Glimepiride (2mg) + Metformin (1000mg)

A clinical study shows that among the available strengths, Glimy M2 (glimepiride 2mg and metformin 500mg) were most commonly prescribed followed by Glimy M1 (glimepiride 1mg and metformin 500mg).

How to take Glimy M tablets

Take Glimy M as you’ve been instructed by your prescribing doctor. How often you take it might depend on the dosage and your sensitivity to the medication.

  • Swallow Glimy M whole with water. Do not break or crush it.
  • Try to take it at the same time each day. Many people prefer to take it with their first meal of the day as this will help to keep up the habit of using Glimy M at regular intervals.
  • Always take with food to avoid stomach upset. This also helps to regulate blood sugar levels which may have spiked due to food intake.

What should I do if I forget to take a tablet?

It happens to us all, so don’t worry. If you forget to take Glimy M, especially when your blood sugar levels are unregulated, you may experience symptoms of high blood sugar, including excessive thirst and urination, drowsiness, odd smelling breath and low appetite.

But don’t panic, simply take it as soon as you remember. If it’s close to the next scheduled tablet, skip it entirely and carry on taking the medication as instructed. Never take double to make up for the missed dose.

What are the overdose risks for Glimy M?

The best way to avoid any issues with overdosing Glimy M is to follow your prescribing doctor’s instructions. Overdosing increases the risk of side effects, some of which can be serious.

Lactic acidosis and hypoglycemia are two of the most severe issues that may occur if you overdose on diabetes medications.

Lactic acidosis is a condition wherein there’s a build up of lactic acid in the bloodstream. This happens when the body produces too much lactate or isn’t able to break down (or metabolise) lactate as it should. Hypoglycemia occurs when your blood sugar levels become much lower than the normal range.

FAQ: Glimy M

Have something specific you want to know about Glimy M? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Glimy M different to other treatments for diabetes?

Answer:
Glimy M is a combination therapy containing two active ingredients – metformin and glimepiride, so it works differently to single ingredient treatments. Combination treatments are usually prescribed when monotherapy hasn’t been successful in managing blood glucose levels in patients.

Both metformin and glimepiride are very effective in treating type 2 diabetic patients even when used as independent treatments. They can also be used in conjunction with other medications.

Is Glimy M similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
Glimy M is just one version of the same medication. Glimepiride and metformin can be found in combination in drugs like Glimiprex MF, Metride 1, Glimestar M1, Glycomet GP1, Glyciphage G1. Only branding, appearance and price separate them as different products. If in doubt, speak with your doctor, who will be able to advise you on this.

What lifestyle choices can I take to help control type two diabetes?

Answer:
The best way to deal with type two diabetes, along with any medication you’ve been prescribed, is a change of lifestyle. Sometimes, even the smallest adjustment can make a major difference to your health.

Exercise need not be intense, just two and a half hours of walking or gardening a week, for example, can help to reduce blood sugar levels naturally. But the most important change you can make is what you eat. Cutting down on salt, fat and sugar can make a difference to both your blood sugar levels and weight, while having a varied and healthy diet that includes fruit and vegetables is also key.

Lastly, don’t skip meals. Eating at regular intervals; breakfast, lunch and dinner, can also help to manage the condition.

Can I buy Glimy M over the counter?

Answer:
Glimy M can’t be bought without a prescription, so it isn’t available to buy over the counter. This is partly because your doctor will need to assess your overall health before prescribing Glimy M. And once you start taking Glimy M, he’ll also need to monitor how the treatment is working for you and adjust or change it if needed.

That’s what makes our service so convenient, we offer prescription medications from the comfort of your own home.
