Telma Telmisartan
What is Telma?
Telma is a treatment for hypertension (high blood pressure) containing the active ingredient telmisartan. It’s used to reduce blood pressure levels and is often prescribed to those who are at a higher risk of complications. Telma is also effective at reducing the risk of heart attack and stroke.
To get the best results out of Telma, you’ll have to combine it with a healthy and active lifestyle. Eating well and getting exercise, along with reducing your stress levels will help to lower blood pressure and Telma will help further with this.
Telma is often prescribed for a prolonged period of time. It’s usually taken once per day and can be taken with or without food. Your blood pressure will be monitored as you take Telma, and this information will help your doctor to make decisions about amending your treatment.
Telma is a branded treatment and the same medication is available as Telsar, Inditel, Telday, Tellzy, Eritel and Targit. These treatments all work in a similar way, but they may look different as they are manufactured by different companies.
How does Telma work?
High blood pressure occurs when the heart encounters pressure as it tries to pump the blood around the body. This can be as a result of the pump of the heart itself and also by the condition of the arteries and veins around which the blood needs to circulate.
Telma is from a group of medications called angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). Angiotensin is produced in the body and causes the vessels to narrow and therefore make it more difficult for blood to flow through them. Telma blocks angiotensin and helps the vessels to widen and this makes it easier for the blood to flow through them. This means that there’s less pressure on the heart as it moves blood around the body and this helps to reduce your blood pressure levels.
Those with high blood pressure have an increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. Telma helps to reduce this risk by reducing blood pressure and reducing the risk of blockages forming that result in a lack of oxygen supply to the brain and the occurrence of a stroke.
What doses of Telma are there?
Telma is available in two dosage sizes: 20mg and 40mg.
After consulting with your doctor, you’ll be advised the best dose for you to start on. It’s not uncommon to start on a lower dose of Telma and then increase it once your treatment has started. Your doctor will monitor your blood pressure and your reaction to the treatment before changing your dosage.
If you find that Telma doesn’t work in the way that you need it to, or it isn’t suitable for you, your doctor will be able to help you explore other treatment options.

How to take Telma
You’ll usually be told to take Telma:
- preferably at the same time every day
- with or without food
- with a glass of water
Continue to take Telma as advised until your doctor tells you to stop. Do not make any changes to the prescribed dosage without speaking to your doctor.
How long does it take Telma to work?
The length of time it takes for Telma to reduce and stabilise blood pressure depends on your blood pressure levels before treatment begins. If you have higher blood pressure levels, it may take longer for Telma to reduce and stabilise them.
Telma needs to be taken for a prolonged period of time in order for it to have maximum effect and to keep blood pressure at a safe level. You may see a reduction in blood pressure levels within a few days of taking Telma, but it can take four to eight weeks for it to have a significant effect on blood pressure levels .
It’s important to continue taking Telma until your doctor tells you to stop, even if you think it’s not working.
What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Telma?
If you forget to take Telma you should take it as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for you to take your next dose, you should miss the forgotten dose and continue taking your treatment as you normally would.
If you take too much Telma, you should seek medical attention straight away. When seeing a doctor or health professional, take your medication with you so that they can see what you’ve taken.
