Telma H is a hypertension medication that lowers blood pressure. Anything over 130/80mmHg is considered high. This can lead to the development of stroke, heart attacks and heart failure.
Telma H contains two active ingredients that lower blood pressure. Telmisartan widens the arteries, reducing blood flow resistance. And hydrochlorothiazide increases your urine production, causing you to pee more often. Together, the ingredients in Telma H decrease blood volume in the body and give it more room to flow, which lowers your blood pressure.
How does Telma H work?
Telma H contains two active ingredients, telmisartan and hydrochlorothiazide.
Telmisartan is an angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). Blood flow resistance is increased when AT1 receptors are activated by angiotensin II, causing smooth muscle contractions. Due to the increased sodium content in the blood, it also increases water retention in the body. This increases blood volume, which in turn raises blood pressure. Telmisartan can block the activation of angiotensin, which lowers blood pressure as a result.
Hydrochlorothiazide functions as a diuretic by inhibiting sodium reabsorption. As a result, sodium is excreted by the kidney, resulting in water following. This increases urine production, making you pee more frequently. As water is emptied, plasma volume declines, lowering blood pressure by reducing blood flow resistance.
What doses of Telma H are there?
There are two doses of Telma H available:
Telma H (40/12.5mg) - Telmisartan 40mg /Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg
Telma H (80/12.5mg) - Telmisartan 80 mg /Hydrochlorothiazide 12.5mg
Telma H (80/12.5) showed greater reductions in blood pressure compared to Telma H (40/12.5), but the one you take will depend on how high your blood pressure is and your personal medical history. After answering a couple of questions online, our doctor will decide what dosage you require.

How to take Telma H
You should take Telma H as advised by our doctor. When taking Telma H:
Take one tablet at the same time every day
Take it with or without food
Make sure to continue taking Telma H for as long as your doctor advises. Make sure to let them know if you intend to stop taking it, and if you have any questions, you can reach out to us online.
How long does Telma H take to work?
Telmisartan starts working within a couple of hours, and the effects last over 24 hours. This means if you're consistent at taking it, at the same time every day, the inhibitory effect should be maintained for 24 hours. Hydrochlorothiazide starts working within 2 hours, with the peak effect occurring at 4 hours. Although Telma H works within a couple of hours, it takes 4-8 weeks to reach a maximum reduction in blood pressure.
What happens if I miss a dose of Telma H?
If you accidentally forget to take a dose of Telma H, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it’s close to the time of your next dose, skip the missed one. Don’t take a double dose.
If you take more than the recommended amount, you may experience very low blood pressure, a fast heartbeat and more. If this happens to you, contact your doctor or go to the nearest casualty department.

Is there an alternative to Telma H?
Answer:
There are many treatments available for hypertension. They fall into three main categories:
Thiazide diuretics. Lowers blood pressure by decreasing plasma volume. Examples include Stamlo T.
Calcium channel blockers. Prevent the entry of calcium into the arteries causing the arteries to widen and reducing resistance in blood flow. Example Amlip and Concor AM.
Angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors and angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). These work by widening the arteries and reducing plasma volume. Example: Losartan.
Many drugs contain a combination of ingredients, such as Stamlo T which is a calcium channel blocker and ACE and Telma H which is an ARB and diuretic. The one you choose is up to you. And if you try one that isn't working well, you can ask our clinician to switch hypertension drugs.
Can I drink alcohol whilst taking Telma H?
Answer:
It's best to avoid alcohol when taking Telma H, as alcohol also lowers blood pressure. Taking it during treatment with Telma H can lower your blood pressure more than usual, causing you to feel dizzy and light-headed. If you do want to drink alcohol, it’s best to ask our clinician for advice before taking it.
How long can I take Telma H?
Answer:
Telma H should be taken for as long as your clinician advises. High blood pressure often requires a long treatment plan. After 4-8 weeks of taking Telma H, the maximum reduction in blood pressure is achieved.
