What is Lipicard?

Lipicard is a treatment for high cholesterol that uses Fenofibrate to reduce cholesterol levels. This is used when your cholesterol levels are too high or you are more at risk of complications. Some of the risks can include heart attack, blood clots or high blood pressure.

You take Lipicard daily and during this time, you’ll need to have regular blood tests to keep a check on your general health and to check that the treatment is working to lower your cholesterol levels.

It’s a branded medicine that also goes by the names like TGR, Shinofen, Finabate, Fenolip Fenacor, Lipireg, Stanlip and Feno-TG.

How does Lipicard work?

Fenofibrate – the active ingredient in Lipicard – works by activating an enzyme in the body called lipoprotein lipase which increases the breakdown of lipids and the elimination of triglyceride-rich particles from the blood. This means that high-density lipoprotein (HDL) can increase. In short, it removes bad fatty substances like cholesterol and triglycerides from the blood to allow good fatty substances to increase.

There can be some side effects and risks with fenofibrate, including the breakdown of muscle tissue which can affect your kidneys. That’s why you need to have tests regularly when you start to take Lipicard. The risks of high cholesterol can be heart attacks, blood clots and high blood pressure – all of which can be really serious for your health.

What doses of Lipicard are there?

It’s usually a pill that you take with food. If you feel that it isn’t working the way you thought it would, you may need to change to something else to manage your cholesterol levels. Always speak to your doctor if you’re looking to change doses, don’t just change the dose by yourself.

How to take Lipicard

Always follow the guidelines given to you by your doctor. Even if you’ve used it (or something similar) before or you feel that you’re familiar with this type of treatment.

For maximum effectiveness, you should use Lipicard as directed. Here’s how to use Lipicard:

  • Take one Lipicard daily, as advised by your doctor.
  • Don’t make any changes to the dosage on your own.
  • Swallow it whole with water.
  • Take Lipicard for as long as it’s been prescribed for you.
  • Ensure that you are having regular health checks and blood tests to check your cholesterol levels and kidney health whilst taking Lipicard.

If you’re pregnant, trying to conceive or are breastfeeding then let your doctor know before taking Lipicard. You should also make sure that your doctor is aware of any other medicine you take and any kidney, liver or heart problems you have. Lifestyle changes can also make a difference to your cholesterol levels, so speak to your doctor about this.

If you feel any discomfort whilst taking Lipicard, let your doctor know. Like all medicines, there can be some side effects when you take Lipicard, but the ability to manage these depends on your circumstances. If you feel they’re severe or outweigh the benefits of your treatment, inform your doctor immediately.

How long does it take Lipicard to work?

Lipicard may start to work in 4-5 hours after taking it orally, but it can take a few days to weeks to start to feel the effects. The reduction to your cholesterol levels depends on how high they were when you began treatment.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Lipicard?

If you forget to take a Lipicard, make sure that you remember to take your next dose on time. Do not take two doses together to make up for a forgotten dose. If you are unsure or worried about what to do next, speak to your doctor or emergency department for advice. The leaflet that comes with your Lipicard can also be a helpful starting point for advice.

Never take Lipicard more than the prescribed dose or reduce your dose without taking medical advice first. If you suspect that you might have taken an overdose of this medicine, go to a hospital.

FAQ: Lipicard

Have something specific you want to know about Lipicard? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Lipicard different to other high cholesterol treatments?

Answer:
Lipicard is different to other high cholesterol treatments as it uses one single ingredient (Fenofibrate) but is very effective. Many people are able to manage their cholesterol levels just by using one medication like Lipicard. It not only lowers the levels of “bad” cholesterol in the body, but also lowers triglycerides and raises the levels of “good” cholesterol in the body.

It’s also helpful for reducing the risk of blood clots and stroke, which can be associated with high cholesterol.

Is Lipicard similar to any other treatments?

Answer:
Lipicard is similar to other medicines like TGR, Shinofen, Finabate, Fenolip Fenacor, Lipireg, Stanlip and Feno-TG.  These all use Fenofibrate to rescue cholesterol, but are made by different manufacturers so may have slightly different formulations and different packaging.

Which dose of Lipicard should I use?

Answer:
The starting dose for Lipicard will vary depending on the recommendation of your doctor. You shouldn’t change the dose yourself, and should always seek medical advice if you feel that your current dose of Lipicard isn’t as effective as it could be, or if you’re experiencing a lot of different side effects that are causing you to worry.

How effective is Lipicard?

Answer:
Fenofibrate reduces some types of cholesterol by 18%–25%. Although this reduction is not as great as that achieved with strong statins, fenofibrate also reduces triglycerides by 40%–48% and increases high-density lipoprotein cholesterol by 35%–36%, which improves the overall cholesterol levels.

Do I need a prescription for Lipicard?

Answer:
Yes, so a doctor can make sure it’s right for you before you take it. It’s not a treatment people tend to come to first, and is usually only taken when other ingredients haven’t worked at lowering cholesterol or you have other risk factors. Your doctor will also monitor your ongoing health and cholesterol levels to ensure that the treatment is working well for you too.
