What is Fibator?

Fibator is a combination treatment for high cholesterol. It contains two active ingredients called atorvastatin and fenofibrate. It’s commonly prescribed when taking the active ingredients separately hasn’t been successful at lowering blood cholesterol levels or if you have a higher risk of complications.

Fibator is usually taken once a day and should be taken with food. It’s recommended that you take it at the same time every day as this will help to prevent the likelihood of missing a dose.

Taking Fibator has been seen to lower the risk of blood clots, stroke or heart attack.

It’s a branded medicine and is also available as Atorlip-F, Bettor Plus, Atovib F, Atrowell F, Satotin-FT and Fenovast. These medications are all similar and work in the same way to lower blood cholesterol levels and reduce the risk of heart attack and blood clots, but branding may make the pills and packaging look different.

How does Fibator work?

Cholesterol is a fatty substance present in blood. The body needs a certain amount of ‘good cholesterol’ to help with the formation of bile, and this is produced in the liver. ‘Bad cholesterol’ can enter the blood when you eat too much fatty food. This cholesterol makes the blood more ‘sticky’ and increases the chances of a blood clot forming and preventing blood from flowing to and from the heart. This can put you at higher risk of blood clot, heart attack and stroke.

The atorvastatin found in Fibator helps to reduce the production of cholesterol in the body and therefore, lowers the amount of cholesterol in your blood. Fenofibrate, the other active ingredient in Fibator, helps to break down the cholesterol that’s already in the blood so that it can be more easily eliminated from the body.

Fibator is often prescribed when taking one of its active ingredients alone hasn’t been successful at lowering blood cholesterol levels. It’s most effective when combined with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

As well as lowering high cholesterol levels, Fibator can also help to reduce the risk of blood clots and heart attack that are closely associated with high cholesterol levels.

What doses of Fibator are there?

Fibator is available in three dosage sizes and each contains the following amounts of the active ingredients:

• Fibator 5 contains atorvastatin (5mg) and fenofibrate (145mg)
• Fibator 10 contains atorvastatin (10mg) and fenofibrate (145mg)
• Fibator 20 contains atorvastatin (20mg) and fenofibrate (145mg)

Your doctor will tell you which dose is best for you to start on. As you take your treatment, your doctor will monitor your health and your cholesterol levels and this will inform any changes that need to be made. It’s common to start on a lower dose of Fibator and then increase this as needed. 

If Fibator doesn’t work in the way you need it to, your doctor may suggest that you try the active ingredients separately.

How to take Fibator

Always take Fibator exactly as directed by your doctor. You’ll usually be told to take Fibator:

• once a day
• with food
• whole with a glass of water
• at the same time each day
• until your doctor tells you to stop

You shouldn’t change the dose, or stop taking Fibator without talking to your doctor first. How long does it take Fibator to work?

The amount of time that it takes for Fibator to reduce cholesterol levels depends on the level of cholesterol present before starting treatment. The higher the level of cholesterol, the longer it can take for Fibator to reduce it. Fibator is also most effective when it’s combined with a healthy diet and an active lifestyle.

Studies show that treatments like Fibator can start to lower cholesterol levels within four weeks if they’re taken as prescribed by a doctor. It’s important to monitor your blood cholesterol levels when taking Fibator as this will tell your doctor how well the treatment is working and whether any changes are needed.

What should I do if I make a mistake when taking Fibator?

If you forget to take a dose of Fibator, you should take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it’s almost time for you to take your next dose, you should skip the missed dose and continue to take your treatment as you normally would.

If you take too much Fibator, seek medical attention. When seeing a doctor, take your medication with you so that they can see how much you’ve taken.
