What is Atorvastatus?

Atorvastatus is a treatment for high cholesterol. The active ingredient, Atorvastatin, benefits those with high levels of cholesterol or triglycerides or those that are at high risk of heart disease.

It’s a medication you take daily, and when you are taking it you’ll normally have your cholesterol levels monitored regularly. Because it’s a maintenance treatment, you’ll normally take Atorvastatin for a long time and have your dose tweaked if and when it’s needed.

How does Atorvastatus work?

Atorvastatin, the key ingredient in Atoravastatus, is among the HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors (statins) that are used as treatment for high cholesterol levels. Studies show they are the first line drugs for treating lipid disorders and can reduce low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) or ‘bad’ cholesterol by 60%.

Atorvastatin slows the production of naturally occurring cholesterol in the liver. This reduces the buildup of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Atorvastatin effectively reduces bad cholesterol and the risk of heart attack or stroke due to blocked arteries. It also has a good safety profile, so is usually well tolerated by patients.

When used alongside a healthy diet and regular exercise, Atorvastatin can help to reduce the possibilities of heart disease developing and the risks associated with it.

What doses of Atorvastatus are there?

Atorvastatin comes in several strengths. Atorvastatin 10mg is the lowest dose and may be prescribed at the start of treatment to see how well you tolerate it.

Atorvastatin 20mg is a higher dose usually prescribed when Atorvastatin 10mg tablets have not been effective. If Atorvastatin 20 mg tablets still do not produce the desired results, then Atorvastatin 40 mg tablets might be prescribed. The strongest dosage of Atorvastatin 80 mg is also the most that should be taken within a 24 hours period.

How to take Atorvastatus

Your doctor will guide you about how to take Atorvastatus.

  • Swallow Atorvastatus with a glass of water
  • You’ll likely have a set dose you take once a day.
  • You should aim to take it at the same time every night. Taking it with a meal you reliably have at the same time each day, dinner for example, is recommended.

Don’t make any changes to the prescribed dose without consulting your doctor. Never double up on your dose to make up for a missed dose. Simply carry on as normal with your next scheduled dosage. If you’re not sure about anything, talk to your doctor about it.

What if I take more than the prescribed dose?

If you’ve taken more Atorvastatus than you’ve been prescribed you should speak to your doctor. You should take your medication with you so they can give you the proper advice and what the risks are.

Unless you’ve taken a significantly increased dosage, the risks are likely to be minimal, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

What should I do if I miss a dose of Atorvastatin?

Don’t worry, we’re all forgetful sometimes. If you forget to take your medication, simply take the next scheduled dose and carry on as you normally would. Don’t take a double dose to make up for the missed one as this will not give you any benefits and is likely to increase the risk of side effects.

If you continue to forget to take your medication, speak with a doctor, who might be able to offer advice on how to keep up the habit of daily treatments.

FAQ: Atorvastatus

Have something specific you want to know about Atorvastatus? Search our info below, or ask our experts a question if you can’t find what you’re looking for.

How is Atorvastatus different to other high cholesterol treatments?

Unlike some other treatments for high cholesterol, Atorvastatus contains a single ingredient, Atorvastatin. It is a potent medication which is widely prescribed as a starting treatment and is beneficial for people who are able to bring down their cholesterol levels with a single medication.

In clinical trials, atorvastatin proved to be more effective than other statins in reducing LDL cholesterol and non-high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels. It can also lower the risk of heart attack, stroke or blood clots or other conditions related to high cholesterol.

Is Atorvastatus similar to any other treatments?

Atorvastatus and its generic form, Atorvastatin, are available as different brand names like Storvas, Atorva, Tonact, Aztor, Atacor, Lipicure, Lipitor and Atorlip. All of these are essentially the same medication and work in a similar way, with the only difference being the packaging, name and price.

How long should I take Atorvastatus for?

The length of treatment for Atorvastatus will be determined by your doctor as there are many things that will need to be considered, including how high your cholesterol is, health risks and how effective the treatment has been.

Never stop taking Atorvastatus or make changes to your given dosage without first speaking with your doctor. They will then be able to advise the best course of action for your condition.

Atorvastatin vs Simvastatin - what are the differences?

While Simvastatin belongs to the same group of medications as Atorvastatin, and both treat high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood effectively, they are in fact not the same treatment.

Clinical studies reveal that atorvastatin is slightly more effective in reducing low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) than simvastatin. After taking medicines for 8 weeks, LDL-C levels for patients taking atorvastatin reduced by 42.5% while for those receiving simvastatin it was 34.8%.

Both atorvastatin or simvastatin have good safety profiles (simvastatin is slightly safer and more tolerable than other statins ), so are usually well tolerated by patients. Some side effects may occur which go away once your body adjusts to the medicine. Frequency of some side effects may differ for both. Simvastatin is a newer class especially prescribed for patients who have side effects to statins.

Atorvastatin and simvastatin are to be taken at different times of the day. Simvastatin, a short acting enzyme, should be taken at night, when it is most effective. Atorvastatin is commonly prescribed to be taken at night as it is a long acting medication.

Whether Atorvastatin or Simvastatin is best for you will depend on a number of factors that will need to be discussed with your doctor.

Are there any other cholesterol lowering options?

As well as Simvastatin, there are many cholesterol and triglyceride lowering statins that can be employed. Rosuvastatin, for example, is a popular and effective treatment, as are Fluvastatin and Lovastatin. In a clinical trial, rosuvastatin 10mg produced significant reductions in LDL-C by 50% and total cholesterol (TC) by 35% within 12 weeks of starting treatment.

Fluvastatin belongs to the same group of HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors as atorvastatin. It is a low-intensity statin as it can lower LDL-C by less than 30%.

Lovastatin is another statin used to lower cholesterol levels. It is usually well-tolerated by patients taking it and can be beneficial for patients who are more sensitive to other statins.

Your doctor may choose one of these if Atorvastatin is not lowering your cholesterol levels or if you are having some issues tolerating it. Thankfully, there are so many options that you’re likely to find one that works best for you.

How much does Atorvastatin cost?

Because it’s available as a branded and generic treatment, Atorvastatin costs might differ from one manufacturer to the next, and one provider to the next. Our pricing is transparent, with no hidden charges that might be added at the end of the purchasing process.

They include pharmacy costs, delivery and tax, so you won’t be hit with unexpected charges at the end of the purchasing process.
